I use a Hotas for flying controls. I think the menus are pretty much mandatory to use m&k. I built my joystick specifically with this in mind - that I could transfer between Hotas and m&k seamlessly since I use my mouse and keyboard for on foot sections in star citizen as well. If you're looking for your first HOTAS just to dip your toes in, then I recommend the x52 pro. I paid $200 for mine and its been an absolute trooper. The "older sticks" such as the sidewinder, T-Flight, 3D extreme pro and CH are all extremely overpriced for what you get, put more money to the side and get a T16K if you must go budget. The T16K is basically the absolute minimum where you won't regret your purchase a month after obtaining it.

Years ago a Reddit commenter somewhere said that for the price of a HOTAS you can go fly a real plane with a flight instructor for an hour, and I took that advice, and it was awesome. I’m now hooked on using my hotas with MSFS 2020 and PilotEdge to do some realistic simming. Something to consider. Nothing wrong with wanting to use a HOTAS setup (NOT to be confused with a "joystick") while "flying" around in space. It is an RPG, but immersion was/is a goal for games like this, from this developer. If it's anything like Bethesda claims, a "life" almost entirely in space is not only feasible, but probable.
