Scientists use certain types of fossils referred to as index fossils to assist in relative dating via correlation. Index fossils are fossils that only occurred during a specific time frame. Typically commonly occurring fossils that had a widespread geographic distribution such as brachiopods, trilobites, and ammonites make the best index fossils. Both fossils and molecular phylogenies point towards an origin of vampyropods in the late Permian or Early Triassic, much later than the emergence of the decabrachian lineage. But a recently described fossil has the potential to upend this view of the clade’s origin and the evolution of the cephalopod shell in general.
